POLITICAL PARTIES ARE NOT NIGERIA’S BIGGEST PROBLEM — BAD CANDIDATES ARE
Brought to you by comrade onyeabor chisom justice
For many years, Nigerians have remained deeply divided along political party lines. Citizens often defend political parties as if they are football clubs, while forgetting the most important factor in governance — the individual candidate seeking power.
The truth is simple: APC, PDP, APGA, Labour Party, ADC, SDP, NNPP and other political parties are not the real problem of Nigeria. The major problem lies in the quality, character, competence and intentions of the individual candidates elected into office.
Political parties are merely vehicles used by politicians to access political offices. What truly matters is the driver behind the steering wheel.
Political Parties Are Only Platforms
A political party is simply an organized platform created to contest elections and gain political power. It does not automatically guarantee good governance.
A bad candidate in a good party will still perform badly in office.
Likewise, a competent, visionary and accountable candidate can emerge from any political party and still deliver quality leadership.
This is why Nigerians must stop voting blindly for party logos and start examining the personal capacities of candidates.
Nigerian History Proves It
Nigeria’s political history clearly shows that failure and success are tied more to individuals than political parties.
Examples of Poor Leadership Across Different Parties
- Some governors under the APC have performed excellently, while others failed woefully.
- Some PDP governors transformed their states, while others were accused of corruption and incompetence.
- Even within smaller parties, there have been leaders who performed beyond expectations.
This proves one important fact: Political party affiliation alone does not determine performance.
Competence Has No Political Party
A competent leader can emerge from any political party because leadership is about:
- Vision
- Integrity
- Accountability
- Capacity
- Experience
- Compassion for the people
- Ability to manage resources effectively
A political party cannot magically transform an incompetent person into a good leader.
Why Nigerians Must Stop Voting Emotionally
Many Nigerians vote based on:
- Ethnic sentiments
- Religious affiliations
- Political party loyalty
- Tribal emotions
- Financial inducements
Instead of carefully studying candidates’:
- Educational background
- Leadership records
- Achievements
- Public service history
- Character
- Manifestos
This emotional voting pattern has repeatedly produced leaders who fail the masses after elections.
Political Defection Exposes the Reality
One major proof that political parties are not the main issue is the constant movement of politicians from one party to another.
A politician may criticize a party today and join the same party tomorrow simply because of political interest.
This shows that many politicians are not driven by ideology but by personal ambition.
If parties truly had strong ideological differences, politicians would not switch so easily.
Developed Democracies Focus More on Candidates
In many developed democracies, voters pay close attention to:
- Debate performances
- Policy understanding
- Leadership competence
- Communication skills
- Public accountability
Citizens scrutinize candidates beyond party affiliation.
Nigeria must develop the same political maturity.
The Danger of Blind Party Loyalty
Blind loyalty to political parties weakens democracy because:
- Bad leaders get protected
- Accountability disappears
- Citizens become divided
- Corruption gets normalized
- Mediocre leaders remain in power
Democracy works best when voters hold individuals accountable, not when they worship political parties.
What Nigerians Should Look For Before Voting
Before supporting any candidate, Nigerians should ask:
- What has this person achieved before now?
- Does the candidate have integrity?
- Does the candidate understand the problems of the people?
- Is the candidate accessible and accountable?
- Does the candidate have a history of public service?
- Is the candidate competent enough to manage public resources?
- Does the candidate genuinely care about the masses?
These questions matter more than party slogans.
The Future of Nigeria Depends on Voter Awareness
Nigeria cannot move forward if citizens continue voting based only on party names.
The future of the country depends on electing:
- Competent leaders
- Visionary individuals
- Transparent public servants
- People with proven capacity
Good governance is not created by party logos but by responsible and capable individuals.
APC, PDP, APGA, Labour Party, ADC and other political parties are not Nigeria’s greatest problem.
The real challenge is electing unqualified, selfish and incompetent individuals into power.
Political parties are only vehicles; the candidate is the driver.
Therefore, Nigerians must stop idolizing political parties and start voting based on:
- Character
- Capacity
- Competence
- Credibility
- Proven leadership ability
Only then can the nation experience true development, accountability and progress.
Nigeria deserves competent leadership, regardless of political party.
